The Top 10 Things People Don't Know About The Salvation Army

Here's your chance to help me compile a top ten list of things people don't know about The Salvation Army. We're about to embark on a publicity campaign to attract people and grow our church. Our catch phrase is "Did You Know?"

In this campaign we are going to tell people the top 10 things most people don't know about The Salvation Army (as a church). So I'm looking for things about our church not our social services or fundraising. For instance:

Helpful - The Salvation Army is a church. Salvation Army officers are pastors.

Not - The Salvation Army helps a lot of people. The Salvation Army raises a lot of money (these are good things, but they're not on topic for this campaign).

Got it? Now let's get going- comment away! I'll keep you posted.

The Salvation Army is a Church that "tries" (as in, Doing the Most Good)...tries to preach and teach and live personal holiness

Did you know....
...that every Salvation Army soldier and officer around the world has signed the same covenant, dedicating their life to pursuing Christ better, and fighting the war against sin and death!

....that at the turn of teh century, female officers were sent out as young as 17 into new countries to begin reaching people for the LORD.

....that William Booth said "My best men are women"

....that in London Ontario, Salvationists were put in prison for beating a drum in a public place.

....that the silly bonnets that used to be a part of the army uniform were actually specially designed to be brick proof because of a group called the "Skeleton Army" that hospitalized several salvationists as they were sharing the reason for their faith

.....that Salvationists are in Sri Lanka right now helping get homes rebuilt for the areas devastated by the Tsunami.... sheltering the homeless is part of Isaiah 58:6-8, and Micah 6:8

....that the heritage of The Salvation Army is to move into the areas that other churches wouldn't, and be the light of Christ and see hope brought into hopeless situations

....that most of our Salvation Army tunes were once familiar drinking songs, with lyrics re-written to glorify Jesus.....after all..."Why should the devil have all the good music"

....that Arnot's originals were invented by a Salvationist

....so were safe matches.

....and the Joy Strings made the top 10 charts and sold a bajillion records (A Salvation Army pop band in the 70's)....(record stats may not be 100% accurate....but close!)

Aurora- you win. Well done.

How about...

- The Salvation Army is a revolutionary movement of covenanted warriors exercising holy passion to win the world for Jesus.
- in case you didn't read closely, it is not a church.
- we are not a metaphor (that is, we're not LIKE an army, we are one).
- our mission is to win the world for Jesus.
- we've got the most hardcore covenant in history.
- it is entirely possible that you can get saved and sanctified, healed and delivered, all in one of our meetings.
- our War Cry is BLOOR AND FIRE.
- uniforms are a sign of covenant community.
- we sign up til we die (how's that for a recruiting approach!).
- Doug Burr used to call himself an apostolic overseer on his business cards (you'll have to ask him what changed).
